If you want to improve your chess game you need to understand chess opening strategies. You need to learn basic ideas to ensure you have a successful game.

While it is very important to be familiar with different openings as you will see them often, it is more important to understand the principles behind the moves that make up all of the different openings. If you know all the reasons behind the moves, you will be able to deal with any situation that arises that you may not be familiar with.

Some of the things you should keep in mind when you approach the opening are center control and king safety. Your pawns and pieces should be focused on controlling the center of the board. Whoever controls the center will control the game. You also want to make sure that your king is safe. With lots of powerful pieces on the board, if your king is not safe it might be a short game for you as your opponent can take advantage of your exposed king. As you think about the things that you should do in an opening, you also want to keep your opponent from doing them. If you can keep your opponent from keeping his king safe, then do it. If you can keep your opponent from controlling the center of the board, then do it. Also make sure that you don't move the same piece more than once in the beginning if you don't have to. You want to get all your pieces involved in a chess game, not just one. Also make sure that you are putting each of your pieces in a position where they can be used to their fullest potential. With all these ideas in mind you are well on your way to becoming a force in the chess world.
