1971 Candidates Tournament

The 1971 Candidates Tournament was supposed to be a formality. The winner would get to play Spassky for the World Championship in 1972 but everyone already knew that Petrosian would win the Candidates Tournament. He had faced off against Spassky in the last two World Championships and they were looking to make it three in a row.

What stood in his way was a young American by the name of Bobby Fischer. While Petrosian easily made it to the finals it wasn’t as impressive as young Fischer who went 12-0 to reach the finals.

This finals match would go down as the most historic Candidate’s tournament ever.
