Vancura Position

Vancura Position

The Vancura Position is a famous example where one side has a king, a pawn on the 6th rank, and a rook on the 8th rank square the pawn would promote to. The other side has a king and a rook.

It’s important to understand that although white has a material advantage, in the example shown, it is a drawn game if black plays correctly. Many times in the end game, one side is going to be up in material. If you are down material, and don’t have a mate threat, it’s often the best play to try and draw your opponent.

This video will show you how black can draw the game, even with the threat that white has of the pawn on the 6th rank. You can also practice this position after you watch the video.
