Accelerated Dragon

Accelerated Dragon

The Sicilian Defense is the most popular defense in all of chess.  It offers up a nice counter attack from black after white plays e4.  With being the most popular defense, many of the variations from the Sicilian Defense have been studied and played more than most openings.  One of the most popular variations is the Accelerated Dragon.

One of the reasons that people would choose the Accelerated path compared to the standard Dragon is that it avoids many of the difficult lines that white can play such as the Yugoslov Attack.  In general the Accelerated Dragon is based on position style of play compared to some of the sharp variations that many other variations share.

White has many different ways to approach this defense.  One of the ways I like to attack this variation is the Passmore lines which centralize the white queen and end up chasing the black king around the board for a mere pawn exchange.  It’s always important to know what both sides should do because any missteps in this opening and either side will be well behind going into the middle game.
