Italian Belloni Trap

Italian Belloni Trap

The Italian Belloni Trap is a fun trap that occurs in the Italian Game.

1. e4 e5
2. Nf3 Nc6
3. Bc4 Bc5
4. c3 d6
5. d4 exd4
6. cxd4 Bb4+

To lay the trap white will continue with 7. Kf1. It looks like a strange move. White is no longer able to castle, the rook on h1 is trapped, and white did not further develop a piece in their attack.

The main idea is that black doesn’t have any great options to continue and the bishop on b4 will end up being a liability.

Two of the common lines black will continue after 7. Kf1 are 7…Nf6 and 7…Bg4. White can play 8. d5, attacking the knight. After the knight moves, white has 9. Qa4+ and forking the bishop on b4.
