King’s Gambit Nordwalde Trap

The Nordwalde Trap starts in the King’s Gambit declined lines where black tries to bring the queen into the game early with 2…Qf6. This is meant to trick white into playing 3. fxe5 as well as threaten 3…Qxf4. White will look to get all of their material involved in the game and overwhelm black. There is no hiding for black in this trap. The full opening moves are:

1. e4 e5
2. f4 Qf6 (Nordwalde King’s Gambit declined variation)
3. Nf3 Qxf4
4. Nc3 Bb4
5. Bc4 Bxc3
6. 0-0

White’s only priority is king safety and the development of material to attack black’s king. Black is now in a tough spot and will find it difficult to continue in this trap.
